ExplorExploring Taiwanese Agricultural Fibers

Exploring the stories of agricultural fibers, rooted in the lands of Taiwan

About

Rooted in the land of Taiwan, this project explores the hidden narratives within agricultural fibers. As crops grow through the seasons, they naturally develop complex fibrous structures—often originating from the surplus materials or by-products of the agricultural cycle.

Chapter Overview

大地

The Land

t shows how field crops transform into fibers, with the land nurturing not just plants but the start of handcrafted artistry. Every leaf vein and growth mark carries the land’s nourishment and seasonal rhythm, as fibers quietly bring its vitality into daily life.

交織

Interweave

This presents the transformation from agriculture to fiber-based art, where materials are reborn in the hands of artisans, connecting material, craft, and contemporary interpretation—documenting the interplay of tradition and innovation, and showing how craft becomes a force for cultural continuity and renewal.

日常

Everyday

This project explores the connection between fibers and everyday life, rethinking the relationship between humans and nature throughregeneration and creative transformation. Fibers not only express beauty, but also carry time, emotion, and meaning within a sustainable cycle.

Design Concept:

Centering on the land of Taiwan, this design utilizes line art to depict farmlands, crops, and terrains, returning fiber to its purest origin. These simplified lines preserve the natural contours without over-refinement, capturing the traces of growth and the profound bond with the earth. Through this visual language, one can feel the stories and warmth carried by land-grown fibers, gently witnessing the journey of materials from the soil into our daily lives.

Design Concept:

This illustration focuses on fiber crops, using delicate, fiber-like brushstrokes to depict the growth forms and textures of pineapple, sugarcane, cotton, and other crops. The strokes preserve natural contours and materiality, showing the traces of growth and the rhythm of the seasons on the land. The layered composition reflects the texture and vitality of the land. Through this visual language, readers can feel the close connection between the land and fibers, gently experiencing how these materials travel from the fields into everyday life.

出版品

Publication Types

出版品
Publication

This design uses a publication as its medium. Rather than being just a book, it integrates knowledge reading, material specimens, and sensory experience. The book is structured in layers from the outside inward, symbolizing the process of moving from the land and environment toward understanding the material itself. It is accompanied by real plant fiber specimens, allowing readers to touch, observe, and compare them, and directly experience the textures, structures, and origins of different plant fibers. The reading sequence moves from farmland landscapes and crop forms to fiber structures and their applications, integrating visual understanding with tactile experience into a way of learning about materials. Through this approach, the design becomes a medium that connects knowledge, materials, and bodily perception, while promoting fiber culture.

書盒
Book packaging

The shapes, textures, and structures of plant fibers are transformed into the design of the book box. Through its packaging, the box conveys the material qualities, layered characteristics, and local production knowledge of fibers, making the book box itself a medium for exploring fiber culture. If you want, I can also make a more concise, design-oriented version suitable for exhibition captions or catalogs.

Through field research and visual documentation, a fiber database is established to collect local knowledge. By integrating digital interfaces and interactive design, the project presents the origins of fibers, production techniques, and the stories of farmers. As users explore and interact with the system, they gradually gain an understanding of fiber culture and its relationship with the land, fostering cultural awareness while supporting the preservation and continuation of local knowledge.
